  • Game Design Challenge: Local Legends

    [10.01.19]
    - Danny Cowan
  • GameCareerGuide.com's Game Design Challenge is an exercise in becoming a game developer, asking you to look at games in a new way -- from the perspective of a game creator, producer, marketer, businessperson, and so forth.

Every month, we'll present you with a challenge about developing video games. You'll have two weeks to brainstorm a brilliant solution (see below for how to submit your answers). After the two week submission period elapses, the best answers and the names of those who submitted them will be posted.

    The Challenge

Design a game based on an urban legend from your hometown or current place of residence.

    Assignment Details

In Honolulu, it's said that looking into the eyes of the Night Marchers, warriors who used to protect ancient Hawaii, will lead to certain death. Tales of a maniacal Bunny Man haunting an overpass have been circulating in Fairfax County, Virginia since the '70s, and the story of the chupacabra spread from Puerto Rico to the southern United States in the 1990s, remaining a persistent legend to this day.

In every city in the world there are hair-raising tales and legends, from haunted hotels where guests are awoken by mysterious knocking noises to terrifying creatures that residents swear they can see in dark wooded patches on the outskirts of town. These location-specific tales of terror are passed on from generation to generation, with new stories of haunted places and terrifying creatures cropping up all the time.

For Game Career Guide's latest Game Design Challenge, your job is to design a game based on an urban legend from your hometown or current place of residence.

You may explore any genre you wish for this month's contest - just make sure that your gameplay pitch is based on a story or legend from a specific location. Some sample ideas include a real-time strategy game where ghosts from an ancient battlefield re-enact the long-forgotten battles of the past, a hotel management sim in which you try to minimize the impact of paranormal activity witnessed by guests, or a visual novel where an out-of-town detective must track down a mysterious beast said to be attacking local residents. There are plenty of urban legends out there that you can cite for inspiration, so read up on your local history and have fun!

    To Submit

Work on your ideas, figure out your strategy for coming up with a solution, and ask your instructors and fellow students for input. When your submission is complete, send it to [email protected] with the subject line "Game Design Challenge: Local Legends." Please type your answer directly in the email body -- do not submit .pdf or Word documents.

Submissions should be no more than 500 words and may contain up to three images. Be sure to include your full name and school affiliation or job title.

Entries must be submitted by Wednesday, October 16.

Results will be posted Tuesday, October 22.
